CHINO HILLS: Two King Wolves began their postseason sprint today in the CIF-SS Southern Division Individual Regionals at Los Serranos Country Club. Sarani Yapa and Emilyn Czaplicki, having secured all-league honors by finishing in the top eight at league finals, qualified for this competition along with two players from Santiago, two from Roosevelt, and one apiece from Norco and Centennial. They joined a field of 121 players from 60 teams across the Southern Section to compete for the top 24 spots that would qualify for the next round of CIF competition.
Sarani Yapa maintained a quick, strong start for the entire round, rocketing out of the gate with a birdie on her second hole. Never dropping out of the top ten, she finished with an even-par round of 74 and a tie for 10th place. Emilyn Czaplicki strayed a little closer to the cut line with a rollercoaster round of birdies and bogies, but she finished with two clutch pars sandwiching an impressive birdie and shot a 75, securing 16th place. Ultimately, both players qualified for the CIF-SS Individual Championships, which will be held at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach next Thursday, 11/5.
Coach’s Take: Wow, wow, wow. What a technically impressive and competitively thrilling day! Sarani and Emilyn were seeded very highly in this tournament, which is as flattering as intimidating. They were playing with excellent golfers, but as equally excellent golfers, they proved themselves capable of the task. I was very impressed by their calm heads throughout the day; each time they had a disappointing hole or shot, and I would check in with them, they easily pushed past their frustrations and focused on the shot in front of them, which is essential for playing a good round. They didn’t really need me much, and as a coach, that’s how I knew it was a great day for them. It was so much fun to watch them today, and I look forward to next Thursday to watch them continue to play their best golf.
