VENTURA: The road to Clovis and the California State Championships runs through Moorpark High School which hosts the CIF Masters Meet. The meet is where the best athletes in Southern California battle for a chance to compete at next weekend’s California State Meet. With the pressure high and state berths on the line, the Wolves rose to the occasion with one of the strongest performances in program history.
Leading the way on the track was Maximo Zavaleta in the 1600m. Running with confidence and complete control, Zavaleta positioned himself perfectly before unleashing his trademark closing kick to capture the win and secure his first ticket to the State Meet.
In the pole vault, Jemeni Mckee battled through a tough competition and finished just shy of the qualifying mark. The junior closes out his season as the #2 vaulter in school history and continues to build an incredible legacy for the Wolves.
Justin Coute continued his breakout junior campaign in the discus, launching a massive personal best throw of 178’4”. The mark moves him to #2 all-time in school history and punched his ticket to Clovis.
Vanessa Hope delivered one of the biggest moments of the day in the triple jump, soaring to a huge personal best that surpassed the state qualifying standard and secured her spot at the State Meet as well.
In the 800m, Frank Stewart fought to the line and narrowly missed the individual qualifying mark. Still, the senior closes his season as the 4th fastest performer in school history in the event — and his night was far from over.
The girls 4×800 team of Gracie Guzzetta, Abbey Starling, Jude Abu-Ghazaleh, and Natalie Drewitz battled in one of the deepest sections in the state and earned a 7th place finish to cap off an outstanding season together.
The boys 4×800 may have been the race of the meet. With the pressure on and a trip to Clovis at stake, the Wolves delivered a historic performance. Brad Quezada opened with a fearless first leg that immediately put King at the front of the race. Freshman Caleb Lua stepped up in a huge moment, running a veteran-like race and dropping a massive personal best 1:57 split to keep the Wolves in contention. Seniors Frank Stewart and Logan Carlson finished the job, securing 4th place and earning the final qualifying spot to the State Meet — the first boys 4×800 relay in school history to qualify for Clovis.
Zavaleta would return one final time in the 3200m and once again showed his experience and composure, staying patient through the early pace before closing strong to secure his second State Meet berth of the weekend for the second consecutive year.
When the dust settled, the Wolves had put together what may be one of the most successful Masters Meet performances in school history having qualified in 5 events including the relay.
King now turns its focus to one final challenge to Clovis this coming weekend at the California State Meet — the stage this team has worked all year to reach.
