RIVERSIDE: Senior Day at The Den was one to remember. All 7 seniors led the charge for the Wolves in a dominant victory over the Ramona High Rams. The Wolves tallied 11 hits in the contest with Lynnette Vu going 3-4. King broke it open in the 4th with the score tied at one by delivering three home runs in the same inning off of the bats of Lynnette Vu, Cheri Thompson and Callie Portillo. Junior catcher Jace Margaritis added a dinger of her own in the fifth to push the final score to 9-1. The offense did more than was necessary thanks to a strong pitching performance by Ryder Bishop. The freshman hurler went six innings, allowing one run on 5 hits with10 strikeouts. Kenzie Carlone collected the save, throwing the final frame, giving up no hits and striking out one.
Senior Day is always so bittersweet and emotional that we try our best to save most of the celebration for after the game but we can’t help but feel a little differently as we watch our seniors compete at the Den for possibly the last time. They all managed their emotions so well, played hard and carried us to victory. Cheri and Callie delivered two monster home runs to make their senior day extra special.
This place has been their home and they have represented their families and our program so well by how they carry themselves on and off of the field, All seven of our seniors are going off to become college athletes in just a couple of short months, many of them going thousands of miles away but they are all ready,,, even if their parents aren’t. Or their coaches.
The post game celebration was full of speeches and tributes by family members and teammates who took the time to recognize all the great things that make these seniors who they are. The seniors reciprocated sharing what they will miss, what they are thankful for and what they are looking forward to. It was a wonderful evening full of sweet stories, lots of belly laughs and a few happy tears.
Playoff details will be released next week as King prepares to make a postseason run to remember.
