GRITTY PLAY FOR KING’S STARS, CZAPLICKI IS STATE BOUND

LONG BEACH: It was a bright and beautiful day at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach on Thursday as King’s pair of players took on the best high school golfers that the Southern Section had to offer. Emilyn Czaplicki and Sarani Yapa, as the only representatives of the Big VIII in this season’s Individual Championships, teed off with players from 58 schools in the Southern Section. The competition was intense and tight the whole afternoon, and the last couple of holes were completed in dwindling daylight, but ultimately, the dynamic duo was split up.
Battling muscle pain and refusing to give up until the last putt dropped in total darkness, Sarani slipped below the cut line with a gritty round of 77. Emilyn Czaplicki, having built herself a thick enough cushion on her front nine with a trio of impressive birdies, kept herself in a position to advance despite putts not dropping in her last few holes. She finished her round with a 73 and in a tie for 17th place in the tournament, placing in the top 28 to advance to the next round of competition.
Coach’s Take: First and foremost, this school should be extremely proud of the grit and unrelenting attitudes of our two players that competed today. This course was tricky and unforgiving, creating the kind of round that did not excuse mistakes and challenged them to succeed. Sarani and Emilyn accepted this challenge head-on, and I witnessed great golf from both of them. It was an emotional ending, as stress was finally released and the results of hard work put into practice felt unreciprocated. But as I emphasized to both of the girls, whether their postseason run was completed or not, they both had incredible seasons. Sarani matched her success from her sophomore year, and Emilyn, in moving on, is reaching a round of competition that’s been unattended by a King player since Morgan Sjoerdsma in 2018. Each of these feats are impressive in their own rights, and it was very exciting, as their coach, to watch them succeed in their own ways. I look forward to continuing to support Emilyn as she returns to Los Serranos next Thursday, this time on the North course, for the 2026 CIF State Individual Regionals, where she will compete against the best of the best for the coveted qualification for the State Championships.
Season Record: 10-4
League Record: 7-3
