MLK 9 – Ayala 9
The girls prepared for a tight match going into this 1st round bout with the Bulldogs of Ayala. With an injury to #2 singles Emily Zhou, the wolves looked to Senior Erica Yin to play line 3 singles and try to grab as many sets and games as possible.
As the 1st round closed the score was tied 3-3, with Erica defeating her opponent 6-1. Theoretically, this gave the girls an opening as long as they could convert sets in later rounds. After 2 rounds it was tied 6-6 and close in total games, as expected. The wolves knew that they were in a positon to get 2 sets each from the singles and doubles sides. #1 singles Emi Williams played a great set against Ayala line 2 winning 6-2 and #2 singles Aahi Tripathi took care of business against Ayala line 3 6-0. On the doubles side all sets were determined by a break.
MLK went 7-5, 5-7, and 3-6. Unfortunately, this put the match in a tie 9-9 and when the games were tallied MLK was short 3 games losing 71-74. As we talked together after the match the coaches shared their appreciation of the hard work and effort the girls gave in this tight match and over the season, reminding the girls of their accomplishments as League Championships. The seniors shared their feelings and reflections on the season and their experiences over the years as a member of the team. All things must come to an end, but this wasn’t a sad ending as the youth of this team will take on the challenge to come back stronger next season.
Emi Williams, Jocelyn Harris, and Adriana Huston will compete on 11/23 in the CIF Individuals sectional at Andulka Park.
