FINISHING WITH A BANG

RIVERSIDE:  Talk about ending with a bang! In the final home match of the season, the King Wolves hosted the Roosevelt Mustangs in their second head-to-head match. With unceasing winds and unpredictable greens, the home course advantage held true for the Wolves, helping them defeat the league champions 225-229.

Emilyn Czaplicki tied with Roosevelt’s Amelia Chen for medalist honors, making it her eleventh title in a row, with a solid 38 despite battling knee pain. Senior Sarani Yapa was right behind, recovering from a slow start with a birdie and handful of pars to finish with a 39. Addy Ruan and Alyssa Christensen held their own in the second group, shooting 45 and 46, respectively. Georgia Herbon struggled with the course a little more, shooting 70. But Kendyl Chapman was the hero of this match, joining the lineup for the last match not only to claim her letter, but also to shoot her personal best of 57 and helping her teammates secure the win. Behind the team, Journey Reish played as an individual and also shot her personal best of a 56.

Coach’s Take: hat a way to finish the season! We came into this match with a healthy respect for Roosevelt, but also with the mentality that we had nothing to lose. After the strong performance we had on Tuesday, I believed that the girls wouldn’t need the double-par security blanket, and we decided to play out against Roosevelt in a chance to upset the apple cart, so to speak. General Old tends to make other teams uncomfortable, and we’ve learned to play it very well. And it worked! Four of our top players performed very steadily, and Kendyl showed up on the day that it truly mattered. Winning this match will improve our league standings and hopefully our chances at a post-season team bid, but it will also provide us with a launchpad of confidence heading into our prelims and finals next week. The girls have put in the work this season. Now is the time for it all to pay off.

The Wolves will return to competition on Monday, 10/19, for league preliminaries at Cross Creek Golf Club in Temecula.

Season Record: 10-4

League Record: 7-3
