CORONA: A combination of strong pitching, hitting and defense helped the Wolves capture win #20 Friday afternoon at Centennial. Senior Sydney Cobb led the offense going 4-5 with 3 singles and a homerun. Right behind Cobb in the lineup, senior Janai Davis did her own damage going 3-4 with a walk. The Wolves racked up 15 hits against Centennial’s pitching with some other highlights that included homeruns by Cheri Thompson and Brooke Lebsock as well as a double off the wall in the fifth inning by sophomore Matilda “Mighty” Carnero. On the mound, freshman Ryder Bishop earned the win with strong command in the circle, retiring the first thirteen batters she faced before giving up a pair of singles. Bishop collected four strikeouts and surrendered one run in five innings of work. Kenzie Carlone picked up the save striking out four, while giving up two runs on three hits in the final two frames.
The final score was 11-3 in favor of King
This was a fun game to watch if you are a Wolves fan. They played good softball for seven innings with solid pitching, hitting and defense throughout the matchup. All seven of our seniors started this game and set the tone. Cheri, Brooke, Syd and Janai proved to be a tough foursome for the opposing pitchers to have to contend with delivering some big hits and quality at bats. Ryder had a perfect game going through 5.1 innings of work and we were going to see how long she could keep at it. In the fifth they delivered a couple of singles off of her but this was one of her best outings of the season and her defense made some great plays behind her. Kenzie and Ryder continue to be a strong combination on the mound for us which we will need to see more of as we head into postseason and face tough lineups.
Overall, the energy was great, the smiles and celebrations were plentiful and that win secured second place for us in the Big 8 which is the best finish King has had in league the last several years. We are looking forward to our final league game at The Den Monday versus Roosevelt, senior day on Tuesday, and kicking off another exciting playoff run for postseason.
