WOLVES’ GROUND GAME TAKES DOWN THE BEARS
RIVERSIDE — King football coach Jason McMains decided to stick with what was working.
Last season, the Wolves racked up more than 500 yards on the ground in their Big West Conference-South Division victory over Temecula Valley.
The yardage total was not nearly as high Friday evening, but King controlled the clock and moved the chains in a 17-7 win over the Golden Bears.
King (6-1 overall, 2-0 in league) finished with 236 yards on 49 carries. The Wolves only threw the ball three times, and two came during the final minutes. Ryu Posadas led the way with 124 yards on 25 carries. Cruz Cuba ran for 65 yards on 15 carries, and Tristan Lepale added 47 yards on nine carries.
Most of King’s possessions Friday were clock-eaters, but the Wolves needed only five plays to reach the end zone on their first drive of the game. Lepale scrambled 34 yards on a quarterback keeper to move the ball into the red zone, and Posadas capped that drive with a 1-yard scoring run.
“Coach told us it was going to a hard-nosed game,” Posadas said. “We wanted to run the ball down their throat, and our line just did a phenomenal job.”
