The King girls’ flag football team played Roosevelt on the first day of the Big VIII league tournament on Monday night.

It was a reversal of roles from their meeting the week before, when King came back from an 18-0 deficit. King jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the second quarter, but in the end Roosevelt fought back and came away with the victory by a final score of 30-25.

The first half was all big plays for the King offense, with deep throws downfield and quick drives that produced touchdown passes from QB Julianna Magdelano to Mia Sudbrack and two to Isabella Magdelano. The second half for King’s offense opened with a long drive that ate up much of the third quarter and resulted in a seven-yard TD catch by Kristen Mason. In the fourth quarter, the offense couldn’t convert a few key first downs and turned the ball over late, giving the Mustangs the ball and a chance to go ahead at the end of the game.

Defensively, King played a strong first quarter and a half but struggled with missed flag pulls later in the game, which led to big gains for Roosevelt. Linebacker Inaya Pearson led the Wolves with nine flag pulls, Bailey Mann added seven pulls and a tipped ball interception, and safety Layla Clabaugh had six flag pulls and four passes defended.

This was a tough loss for the team, as a win would have put them in the league tournament championship game next week. The Wolves will now play Norco in the third-place game of the league tournament at Centennial High School next week.

There is much to learn from the loss, with the primary focus on dialing in the small mistakes that add up throughout a game and create an unfavorable result in the end. King is now 14-6 this season.
