RIVERSIDE:  The Wolves and Golden Bears squared off once again on Thursday afternoon at General Old Golf Course in Riverside. The humidity was high, but spirits were too as our team hosted our first home match of the season, evidenced by the strong showing of supportive parents. The team battled well through the windy and dry conditions of the course to defeat Temecula Valley 231-262.

It was a dogfight at the top of the lineup as Sarani Yapa and Emilyn Czaplicki took turns taking shots at the ordinarily difficult course. Emilyn took home medalist honors for this match with a one-under 35 and a scorecard decorated with an eagle, two birdies, and a few bogeys. Sarani had a more stable round with a single bogey and a single birdie to shoot even par 36. Alyssa Christensen shot a steady 48, and Addison Ruan was right behind with a 52. Georgia Herbon and Journey Reish were neck-and-neck rounding up the third group with a 60 and 64, respectively.

Coach’s Take: As a team, we had an even balance of highlights and lowlights during this round, but we finished our final round of the first week of competition on a high note with our second win. The good thing about golf is that there is always room to improve; I think if you were to ask Emilyn and Sarani, who on paper had excellent rounds, they could tell you of another stroke or two that they could easily drop given a second chance. So, I think there’s a chance to bask in the glow of victory while reflecting on the round and finding areas that we’re happy with and others that we know we need to work on. We’ll use this weekend to recover from the hot week, and we’ll enter next week ready for two tough competitors: Palm Desert on Tuesday and Great Oak on Wednesday.
