RIVERSIDE:  There are fewer things better in sport than a good-old-fashioned Cross Town Rivalry.  Make it even sweeter when the home team in said rivalry goes home victorious.

That’s what transpired on the hardwood court of King High Tuesday night as the girls volleyball team took on the Poly Bears and the Wolves won.

After a hard-fought freshman match that ended with Poly winning 2-1, that would be the end of their plans for the night as King’s JV team swept 2-0 and then the marquee match at the varsity level saw King pull away to a 3-1 win.

But it wasn’t easy.

“The girls had to find their fire to take tonight’s win,” said head coach Michael Tongg

The Wolves struggled in set one and took the loss, but they battled back to win set two as Sam Miller and Jael Moore led the way with 11 and 13 kills apiece. “We might’ve struggled a little at some points in the first set,” said senior Sophia Manley, “but not after the that.”

Indeed, the girls “set a new tone to win set three,” Tongg added, “and then battled in set four to come back from behind to win the set and the match!”  Sam Miller had “unending hustle” according to Tongg, while Manley and Moore were lethal with their kill shots.

Captain Brooklyn Nielsen added, “Im very thrilled that we won our first game and so excited for the season.”
