RIVERSIDE: The 8th Annual Battle of the Big Dogs dual between the North Huskies and King Wolves was a spectacular battle of grit and dominance on both sides.

The iconic Riverside rivalry between two Riverside successful father and son wrestling coaches and Sport Hall of Famer’s was a blast. The outcome was not decided until the very last match and for the first time the battle ended in a draw 34-34!

Two young wrestlers showed up ready for battle and Paxton Shulte registered a pin and sophomore Jesse Schmidt achieved a major decision to put 10 points towards King’s success.  Freshman Nixon Dak was awarded the MVP by the North coach for a courageous battle against the captain of North’s team.

This was the first time in history that a King wrestler lost in the duel but due to courageous wrestling against a veteran opponent still achieved the prestigious award.

Other highlights from the Big Dog Battle include wins from Gil Galindo, Leon Fitarua, Matt Mirtich, Andrew Reyes and Skylar Cull.

The girls varsity team was flat but the boys JV team won by a significant score showing that the Wolves will be ready for next year’s battle.

The King wrestling team needs to work on not giving up pins and following the playbook from drilling sessions in practice. The wrestler’s who stick to the fundamental basics have more success. King is improving each week and preparing for the Canyon Springs tournament.
