RIVERSIDE:

To officially close out a historic season, the Martin Luther King High School swim team gathered to celebrate the hard work and achievements of its athletes. Hosted by the Swim and Dive Boosters, the evening provided a chance to reflect on a year defined by record-breaking performances, the successful inaugural season of the Unified Swim Team, and a culture of relentless improvement.
The coaching staff was proud to present the Most Valuable Swimmer awards to two athletes who served as models of success in the water. Alyssa Christensen was honored as the true anchor of the Varsity Girls for her selfless dedication to her relays and her teammates. Victor Perez was recognized as the team’s superstar, whose perseverance and double-victory in the 200 and 500 at League Finals set a standard for hard work that carried him all the way to CIF.
The spirit of growth was celebrated with the Most Improved Swimmer awards. Freshman Cameron Bobb received this honor for his rapid ascent from JV to becoming a core varsity contributor, while Charlotte Cleary was recognized for her unwavering commitment and the consistent progress she displayed throughout the entire season.
The Coaches’ Awards highlighted five individuals chosen for their exceptional effort and willingness to improve themselves and those around them. Orlando Salgado was recognized as a true model of dedication and consistent improvement. Gabe Urteaga was celebrated as the literal joy of the team, bringing a smile to everyone he met and cheering for others even on the big stage at CIF. Journey Reish was honored for her tenacity; after a rough start, her dedication to perfecting her strokes resulted in a massive 15-second drop across her events. Kareem Istwani’s hunger for success earned him a rare JV spot at League Finals, and Izzy Tovar was commended for her incredible turnaround, transforming from a reluctant athlete into a model of a great attitude and self-improvement.

Recognition for the “pursuit of self-satisfaction through effort” came through the Wolfpack Pride Awards. Jayden Tima was honored for his dedication to morning practices and his infectious positive attitude. Sophia Shah was recognized for her courage in seeking out the hardest events to challenge herself, and Jack Roland was celebrated for a superstar work ethic that led to a staggering 20-second drop in his 500 freestyle by the time he reached CIF.
Finally, the prestigious PEAK Award was presented to Kendall Samosky. This honor recognized her unique ability to bring consistency, character, and a “can-do” attitude to both the pool and her academic studies, proving that excellence is a habit in all areas of life. While the season has come to a close, the impact of these athletes and the culture they have built will be felt at Martin Luther King High School for years to come.
