WALNUT:  The Wolves traveled to Walnut, California on Saturday, to compete at the Mt. SAC Invitational, one of the longest-running cross country meets in the country. After 78 years of competition, the historic meet welcomed its one-millionth runner this year.

However, the familiar Mt. SAC experience looked a little different this time around. Persistent rain forced a course change, replacing the traditional hilly challenge with a faster, more road-focused three-mile course. The new layout was the same course where the Wolves made history last season by qualifying both varsity teams for the CIF State Championships. With that success still fresh in their minds, the Wolves looked to carry that momentum into their final invitational of the season.

The varsity girls kicked off the day in impressive fashion, securing a convincing team victory with just 37 points! Jude Abu Gha-Zhaleh led the way with a third-place finish, closely followed by Natalie Drewitz in fourth. Jordyn Ramirez and Leah Goodman added two more top-10 finishes, placing eighth and ninth, respectively, while Hayden Shelton rounded out the scoring in 19th. The victory marked the Lady Wolves’ first team win of the season and another important step forward as they continue to build confidence heading into the postseason. With the league finals quickly approaching, the girls are finding their stride at the right time.

The varsity boys were up next and showcased their strength through pack running, earning a second-place finish in their heat. Andrew Moyo continued his outstanding senior season, leading the Wolves with a personal-best time of 15:38. Mason Stehmeier followed with a 23rd-place finish, while Abdu Alqaza led the next group of Wolves across the line. With four additional teammates close behind him, the pack continued to demonstrate the depth that has become a key part of this team’s identity. As Moyo continues to find his rhythm and the rest of the varsity squad works together to move through the field, the Wolves are building momentum heading into the most important stretch of the season.

The sophomore boys provided another highlight of the day, earning a third-place team finish despite moving their top three runners up to varsity competition. Jacob Gamino and Isaiah Gallardo led the way with outstanding performances, placing fourth and sixth, respectively. Their strong finishes highlighted the depth of the program and the continued development of the younger Wolves, who stepped up to deliver another podium performance.

The JV boys also had a memorable day, bringing home a team victory behind an impressive one-two finish from Juan Carlos Leiva and Logan Ambos, who placed second and third, respectively. Their performances helped cap off a successful day for the Wolves across multiple levels of competition.

With their final invitational of the season in the books, the Wolves walked away from Mt. SAC with a team victory, multiple podium finishes, and plenty of momentum. Now, the focus shifts to the Big VIII League Finals, just a week and a half away, where the Wolves will face the league’s best with CIF qualification on the line. The postseason is fast approaching, and the Wolves are working to ensure they’re ready when it comes.
