CORONA:  The Wolves took on the Corona Panthers in the first league match of the season on Tuesday afternoon, at Corona’s home course, Dos Lagos. A noticeably narrow and hazardous course, Dos Lagos dealt both teams their fair share of successes and struggles, but ultimately, King walked away with a victory of 227-320 over Corona.

Emilyn Czaplicki was the match and team medalist for the day, shooting a 3-over 37 with a consistent slew of pars for the first five holes. Sarani Yapa was close behind with a 39 and a scorecard colorful with back-to-back birdies and a handful of bogies. Fellow senior Alyssa Christensen continued her steady streak with a 45, handling her first meeting with the course very well. Our youngest players, Addison Ruan, Georgia Herbon, and Journey Reish, also managed their first time on Dos Lagos quite well, shooting 53, 55, and 63, respectively.

Coach’s Take: Coming into this match, after a full week off from competitions, we focused our attention on mental strength and strategic management of what is actually quite a complicated little course. Despite only being a par 34, the front nine has narrow and sloped fairways surrounded by lateral and out-of-bounds hazards that can be quite intimidating, especially to our four players who had never played this course before. But today was a great chance for us to practice the age-old golf mantra of competing against the course, not our opponents. Smart targets and safe shots were the name of the game today, and for the most part, it worked out well. We appreciate Corona’s warmth and hospitality as both teams continue to grow their programs, and we look forward to hosting them at General in a couple of weeks.

King will return to competition next week with four matches in a row from Tuesday through Friday.
