ML King was once again recognized as a Unified Champion School through the Special Olympics for the 2025-2026 school year.  This recognition is earned through a 3 part system of inclusive youth leadership, whole school engagement and unified sports.

Unified sports brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team for training and competition. Inspired by a simple principle—training and playing together creates a quick path to friendship and understanding—Unified Sports breaks down stereotypes, builds meaningful connections, and fosters a culture of empathy and mutual respect.

MLKing has had an established Unified Track and Field team due to the work of Sondra Lough and John Corona and in the 2025-2026 school year added a Unified Flag Football and Unified Swim team.  With the support of our athletic director Amanda Chann, adaptive physical education teacher and Unified Flag Football coach Peter Taynton, head Track & Field Coach Mat Vasel and head Swim coach Leisha Masi, MLKing was able to earn the recognition once again as a Unified Champion School and create many more opportunities for inclusion on our campus and in our community.
