TEMECULA:  The Wolves’ first head-to-head match of the season was against Temecula Valley at the beautiful Temecula Creek Inn in Temecula on Tuesday afternoon. The teams met to compete on the Stonehouse course, which is the most exciting and most difficult of the three courses that TCI offers. But the girls met the challenge of the hilly and tree-lined course, as well as the 100 degree heat and 15 mph winds, head-on and defeated Temecula Valley 223-258.

Sarani Yapa led the pack once again in the second of our back-to-back competitions this week, shooting an excellent two-under 33, with seven pars and two birdies. Emilyn Czaplicki also finished strong, shooting 39 while juggling the final dregs of a stomach bug, a broken driver, her first time playing the course, and her first competition back after taking last season off. Alyssa Christensen broke 50 for the first time this season with a final score of 49. Addison Ruan and Georgia Herbon tied at 51, bouncing back quickly from their scores the previous day, and Journey Reish finished up the group with a score of 65.

Coach’s take: I am very pleased with how the girls played Tuesday afternoon. We didn’t have time to practice between the Poly tournament and our first match, but they were apparently able to iron out some wrinkles in their own games overnight. They showed impressive fortitude and endurance to play and walk 27 holes in two days, especially in the intense end-of-summer heat. Sarani, Emilyn, and Alyssa demonstrated their senior experience both on the course and on the bus, and I’m excited to see how well this team is interweaving and working together. This win was the confident kick-off to the season that we needed and strong encouragement to keep the pedal down and keep working on short game and consistency, especially.

We look forward to hosting Temecula Valley at our home course of General Old on Thursday as we once again battle the elements and the Golden Bears.
