The MLK girls’ flag football team played its first league game of the season on Monday against Corona. The Wolves came out on top with a 28-13 victory.

On offense, King quarterback Julianna Magdelano shined with 223 yards passing and 80 on the ground. She threw two touchdowns and ran for two more. Senior receiver Kristen Mason had an outstanding performance with 6 catches for 119 yards, two touchdowns, and three extra points. The key play for the offense came in the early fourth quarter when Magdelano hit Mason down the sideline, and Mason took it 66 yards for the touchdown, extending the Wolves’ lead. On defense, rusher Annabelle Distel had two sacks, while safeties Carli Collins and Layla Clabaugh each had an interception.

Sophomore cornerback Londyn Nava brought the energy to the game and finished with five flag pulls and two passes defensed, one on the goal line to stop an extra-point try by Corona.

The Wolves followed up their league opener with a win against Riverside Poly in a crosstown rivalry game on Tuesday. The final score was 20-6, with King in control for the first two and a half quarters, and Poly continuing to fight until the end.

QB Julianna Magdelano continued her impressive play by throwing for 260 yards and a score, while running for 101 yards and two more touchdowns. Junior receiver Isabella Magdelano took over as the leading receiver in this game, accumulating 8 catches for 108 yards, a touchdown, and an extra point. The sister connection of Magdelano to Magdelano had a huge play in the third quarter when Isabella got free deep in the middle of the field, and Julianna threw a perfect pass that resulted in a 46-yard gain to set up the Wolves’ third touchdown of the game. Defensively, it was a group effort with the entire team playing strong defense against Poly’s downfield passing attack.

McKenzie Dewar recorded the Wolves’ only sack of the game and added a flag pull for loss as well. Cornerback Londyn Nava had an interception and defended two passes. Once again, she came up big on fourth down from inside the five-yard line when Poly attempted a quick slant pass to their star receiver, but Nava played perfect coverage, stepped in front of the receiver and knocked the ball down, giving it back to the offense and saving a touchdown.

The team is excited for these two big wins, but knows there is still work to be done and improvements to be made. King takes on a strong Norco team in its second league game next Monday and hopes to build on the momentum from these two wins.
