The Wolves started the second round of league play strong with a 9-3 victory over the Corona High Panthers. The Wolves sent 11 hitters to the plate in the opening frame scoring 7 runs on 4 hits in the bottom of the first. Brooke Lebsock went 2-3 at the plate and Cheri Thompson and Janai Davis added to their home run totals with blasts in the first and second innings respectively. The Wolves collected 7 hits in the game. In the circle, Kenzie Carlone earned the win giving up 7 hits and 3 runs in 3 innings of work before Ryder Bishop entered the game in the 4th to collect the save. Ryder pitched 4 innings allowing 3 hits and no runs while striking out two.
Defensively, the King played solid softball committing no errors and turning a double play to get out of a jam in the 4th.
We were happy to see the Wolves start fast and keep the energy up throughout the game. We had 10 quality at bats in the first 11 plate appearances in the first inning. We were hitting the ball hard, going after pitches that we knew we could hit and making productive outs. The energy in the dugout matched the focus at the plate which was something we have been talking about and waiting for.
Our pitchers tag teamed effectively once again. Kenzie threw a couple good innings but then started to give up too much of the ball to their lineup so we brought Ryder in with a completely different look and it worked perfectly. She got the ground balls we needed and used her defense to make the plays behind her.
Sydney Cobb made a great play in left field to deny an extra base hit, the infield turned a key double play to take away Corona’s momentum and we kept delivering punches at the plate. This was a team effort and we are excited to take this with us to battle it out with Norco on Friday.
