Day 3 of the Carew Classic was a good one for the Wolves as they collected two wins against Eastlake and crosstown rival Riverside Poly. Kenzie Carlone earned the win in game one against Eastlake, surrendering 4 hits and 2 runs over 4 innings of work while striking out 6. Freshman Ryder Bishop appeared in relief, throwing the final 3 frames of the contest allowing just two hits and striking out one. The Wolves got on the board right away in the first inning scoring 3 of their runs with the help of Cheri Thompson’s single and a 3-run blast by senior Janai Davis. Davis led the Wolves’ offense against Eastlake finishing 2-3 with 3 runs batted in.
The second game on Friday against Poly was highlighted by a stellar performance from the freshman lefty Ryder Bishop who didn’t allow a single run in the complete game effort, giving up only two hits and striking out 9 bears through 7 innings. Once again, King jumped out to a fast start putting up two runs in the first inning and added two more insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Wolves collected 12 hits led by 3 seniors Callie Portillo, Brooke Lebsock and Cheri Thompson who had two hits a piece. Lebsock also delivered a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning of the game.
Friday was a good day of softball for us. We were a little sluggish from a late night return from Thursday and early call time today but the girls found a way to get what they came for. The contributions from everyone on the roster is what is really making this season special. We are relying on our seniors for the leadership and experience that they bring but we are also getting gritty performances by our wolf pups and everyone in between.
Ryder was fun to watch against Poly today. She attacked their lineup, worked ahead in the count and wasted no pitches. Lynnette Vu was masterful behind the plate for her as well. Dakota Hyler is coming in clutch off the bench delivering some big hits for us and our bats seem to be heating up at the right time for several of our Wolves. The energy wasn’t quite what we are used to but good teams find ways to win regardless and they did that today.
King has one more game Saturday at 3:15 vs. Central Catholic for the Bronze bracket championship of the Carew Classic at Peralta Park.
