RIVERSIDE: The Lady Wolves hosted #11 ranked Roosevelt for their last league game of the season. Sophomore Lucy Allen led off scoring by receiving and turning with the ball off a throw-in and beating her man. She slotted a pass that eluded the hands of the Roosevelt goalkeeper. The scored remained tied until the end of the half. In the second half at the 63rd minute mark, Lucy sprinted down the field with the ball and took a wide angle shot from 30 yards away that found the upper corner of the net to make the game 2-0. In the 70th minute, Roosevelt took a corner kick that was deflected into a unmarked Roosevelt player who converted their shot to make it 2-1. With under two minutes remaining in stoppage play, a Roosevelt player beat her man to the outside and shot the ball past the outstretched hands of the King goalkeeper to make the final score 2-2.
We had great efforts from all positions tonight. In our two previous games, the Roosevelt wingers had been dominating against us. Tonight, with the outstanding play of Kyra Christensen and Marina Castillo, we were able to frustrate and demoralize the strength of their team. Captain Macy-Paige Quiroz said, “Our teamwork and determination persevered in tonight’s game as we fought hard back and forth against a tough Roosevelt team. Every single one of us played an amazing part in today’s game, pushing us to a tie and improving our hopes and chances for a CIF spot. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together as a team”
In our pregame meeting I shared with the girls the belief that “We grow through what we go through”. After 28 games this season, we have gone through a lot and grown as a team even more. I am so proud of how well they executed tonight. After the game, the Roosevelt coach said “You look like a totally different team” from when we lost to them twice this season. The girls came into the game prepared with the understanding of what it would take to compete with a team as accomplished as Roosevelt.
At the beginning of the season, we had a vision of what our season could be and how to make it happen. The girls have given all that they have to put them in a position to make the playoffs. As their coach, I cannot have asked of anything more than they have given this year.
