RIVERSIDE: The Wolves defended their den in big fashion at their home opener beating the Vista Murrieta Broncos 13-3 in 5 innings on Wednesday. Offensively, King enjoyed clutch performances by junior centerfielder, Jordyn Ramirez who was 2-3 with 3 runs batted in and Nebraska-bound senior Brooke Lebsock who was also 2-3 with a towering homerun to help King extend the lead.
The Wolves lineup combined for 13 hits in five innings and only struck out one time against the Broncos pitching and won, 13-3.
Defensively, King had another clean performance on the dirt playing error free behind the solid pitching of Kenzie Carlone who gave up 6 hits while striking out 6 in five innings of work.
Preparing for this contest, we challenged our Wolves to look back to last year against VM and to make some adjustments at the plate as well as on defense. The new and improved planning paid off. VM put up a fight the first couple of innings but there was no panic in our dugout. Everyone stuck to the plan, trusted the process and executed perfectly. The quality at bats and run production at the plate gave Kenzie the breathing room and confidence she needed on the mound to fight through a couple location mistakes early in the game that led to some hits for the Broncos.
What changed the game for us was the discipline and approach by all 9 hitters in the lineup. That puts a lot of pressure on the opposing pitchers knowing they have to throw strikes yet can’t relax against any of our hitters knowing they all have the potential to deliver some damage. It was really, really fun to watch our offense explode with such purpose in the box.
From the nine-hole in the lineup, Jordyn’s two key hits were crucial in driving in the runs and turning our lineup over to get back to the top with Brooke and Jace and Cheri waiting their turn. We were really proud of the response of our entire squad from last year’s matchup with VM to this one.
The Wolves’ next test will be a doubleheader this Saturday at Pacifica HS against two traditionally powerful programs: Los Alamitos and Notre Dame. We are eager to see our squad rise to the occasion and fight for each other one pitch, one plan at a time.
