FRESNO: Over the weekend the Wolves took their show on the road as they headed north to take part in the competitive Central Valley Showcase in Fresno, CA. The King Wolves enjoyed much success with all facets of their game delivering high caliber performances against some top teams.
Game 1 was a pitchers’ duel of sorts with both teams being stymied at the plate for most of the contest. Junior Mackenzie Carlone earned the win for the Wolves pitching a complete game, striking out 5 and giving up only two singles and no walks while the opposing pitcher held King’s lethal lineup to just 5 hits while striking out 5 as well. The Wolves scored their lone run in the 5th inning on an error following a triple by Brooke Lebsock.
The bats were warmed up by the second game of the day as the Wolves defeated the Hollister Haybalers by a score of 12-5. Cheri Thompson had a stellar game at the plate going 3-3 with a double, a home run and a grand slam as well as a sacrifice fly giving her a total of 9 runs batted in versus Hollister. The Wolves collected 11 hits in the game and turned 4 double plays on defense behind King’s pitching staff. Ryder Bishop earned the win giving up 5 hits in 5 innings of work.
The Wolves returned to the field bright and early Saturday morning for their third game of the tournament against Sanger and picked up right where they left off from the night before scoring 4 runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Cheri Thompson was on fire once again going 4-4 at the plate with 2 doubles and 2 singles. Lynnette Vu also had a great performance in the box going 3-3 while Sydney Cobb and Brooke Lebsock both collected multiple hits as well. The combined efforts of Kenzie Carlone and Ryder Bishop produced a no-hitter for the Wolves pitching staff with Carlone earning the win pitching the first 3 innings of the contest and Bishop closing out the final two frames in the 12-0 victory.
The Wolves finished the tournament defeating the Central East Bengals by a score of 7-2. Despite the Bengals scoring first in the bottom half of the first inning, the Wolves didn’t take long to respond. With the score tied at 1, senior Janai Davis launched a 3-run home run to dead center that ricocheted off the scoreboard 230 feet away from home plate to give the Wolves a 4 run lead in the third. Cheri Thompson added to the lead going 2-3 at the plate while senior outfielder Callie Portillo provided a clutch double in a pinch hit opportunity in the middle of the contest. Freshman southpaw Ryder Bishop collected the win striking out one and giving up 3 hits and one run in 4 innings of work before handing the ball off to Kenzie Carlone who struck out 4 and gave up 2 hits in the final two innings of the game.
This was a fantastic weekend for our squad. We couldn’t be more pleased with how they conducted themselves on and off of the field in our first overnight adventure together as a team. They navigated the challenges that come with two-night stay in a hotel, double headers two days in a row, sharing a room with your teammates, and taking on teams we knew very little about. The girls were locked in all weekend and made tons of memories together. Cheri Thompson had a killer weekend at the plate hitting .769 over the 4 games accompanied by Lynnette Vu, Callie Portillo, Addison Christensen, Sydney Cobb and Brooke Lebsock who all hit .360 or better for the weekend. Offensively, our lineup produced 38 hits and 3 home runs in 4 games.
Not to be outdone, our pitchers were equally impressive holding opponents to a .152 batting average only allowing 12 hits in 4 games. Our defense turned 7 double plays and enjoyed some web gems by Sydney Cobb, Brooke Lebsock and Cheri Thompson while our catchers were a key component behind the plate for our pitching staff. We are really enjoying the growth of this team, their response to challenges they are faced with, and the absolute love they have for each other. It’s a privilege to watch them play at this level and we are eager to take this into league play next week.
