PROFILES IN CHARACTER – MAXIMO ZAVALETA

September 23, 2025

Written by Coach Mario Machuca

Three years ago, word spread that a generational talent from just down the street at Earhart would soon be joining the King cross country

program. Yet on his very first day of camp, he was late. Coach Ibarra remembers it vividly—reminding the young athlete that no matter who you are, being on time is non-negotiable. From that day forward, he never showed up late again.

In the three years since, this athlete has poured himself into the program, working tirelessly to raise not only his own performance but also the standard of excellence for the entire team. His list of accomplishments is staggering: school records in the 3200m, 3-mile, 4x800m, and Distance Medley Relay; leading his team to program records in both the 3-mile and 5k; two-time league champion in cross country; two-time league champion in the 1600m and 3200m. Last season, he etched his name in history as the first King athlete ever to capture three CIF titles in a single year—winning Division 1 cross country, the 1600m, and the 3200m.

And yet, despite the countless wins and accolades, you’d never hear him boast. He is humble to the core—the first to shake his competitors’ hands, the first to check on his teammates no matter how exhausted he may be. For all his achievements, he remains the same goofy, light-hearted kid who first walked onto campus three years ago.

Maximo inspires not just through his times but through his discipline, character, and the way he carries himself every single day. For his dedication, humility, and leadership, we are proud to honor him with the Champion of Character Award.
