RIVERSIDE: The King Lady Wolves kicked off their season with a home game against Western Christian.
Samantha McWaters said following the game “We played well together in our first match and had a strong second half to secure the win. I am excited to see how we perform in the future”.
King started out controlling possession and attacked the goal effectively in the first half.
The Western Christian keeper made three great saves to keep the halftime score at 0-0.
Four minutes into the second half, Junior Giannina Barillas sent a corner kick that went out to the 15 yard line and was volleyed in by Macy-Paige Quiroz who chipped the ball into the box.
Senior Jordan Akparanta quickly lifted the bouncing ball into the upper corner of the net to make the score 1-0. For the next 36 minutes, the King defense thwarted the Western Christian attack and was able to hold on to the shutout.
It was a good start to the season for the girls. They played well together and focused on our pre-game goals of possession, switching the point of attack, and good diagonal balls in behind the defense that we could make good runs onto.
With our upcoming tournament this week, we will have four games to work on building off today’s effort. I believe we have he potential to be a high scoring team and look forward to proving it at the Patriot Cup tournament.
If the team continues to believe in themselves, we can have a very successful season.
