RIVERSIDE: “Shadow Hills was a good and aggressive squad,” said King High’s coach Jesus Martinez after his girls basketball team lost their season opener to the Knights out of Indio.
“Just a bad opening night,” he added.
The result was a combination of turnovers, missed free throws and poor shooting by most of the Wolves. Exceptions were from freshman Sophia Manley who led all scorers with 15 (along with 7 rebounds), Senior and captain Martha Firmo who dropped in 9 points on the night and Lily Gutierrez who finished with 11.
It’s only the first game of the season, but Martinez talked with the team following the loss. “After the game, we had a long talk about accountability and attention to detail,” he said. He stressed to his charges the importance of doing the small things to become a better team.
Steps toward that goal won’t take long to manifest, the Wolves play Valley View Tuesday afternoon at 5PM at JW North HS
