The girls tennis team matched up in the first round of CIF Division 3 against, of all teams, Big 8 League rival, Roosevelt.
“We know them well,” said King head coach Shaun Harris, “It was a bit of a surprise as you typically don’t see a league opponent right away. But the girls came out ready for a fun competitive match.”
Given the sliver of time since the two teams faced each other in the League Tournament two weeks ago, Harris tweaked the lineup. “We decided to make some small lineup changes to see if we could give them a different look and grab as many sets as possible,” he explained.
The 1st round went 2-4 with a close set 5-7 loss. The 2nd round went 3-3 with a tiebreak that we just couldn’t finish losing the set 6-7 (7-9).
Still, Senior and Captain Zoe Zhang won 2 sets 6-0, 6-0. In doubles play, Junior captain Jocelyn Harris and senior Grace Zhou swept in doubles 6-1, 6-2, 6-2
“Going into the last round we needed 5 more sets for the win,” said Harris, but the team was only able to snag two more sets while dropping another close set to a tiebreak.
Harris concluded by saying, “The 3 close sets that didn’t go our way were the difference between a 10-8 win and the 7-11 loss and while. This has been a challenging season, but the girls competed well and should hold their heads high.”
