RIVERSIDE: The nascent flag football team, now in its third season, honored their 11 seniors before the game began, as each player was escorted out by their family and celebrated for their dedication to the program before the game. “The senior captains (Kyleigh Richardson, Aniyah Sega, Kimberly Tinielu, and Lilly Cardela) spoke to the team as they do each game, encouraging them to focus, play with great effort, and for each player to do their part to help the team win,” said King Head Coach Adam Christiansen.
Once the action began, King went up by three touchdowns over Moreno Valley. They were led by Senior Captain, Aniyah Sega. Sega began the torrent of points with a 60 yard touchdown catch and run on the first series.
On defense, Senior Captain Kyleigh Richardson led the team in flag pulls and also had a pass breakup. Freshman quarterback Julianna Magdelano scored two touchdowns and threw three.
But it wasn’t all the seniors, as freshman Ryder Bishop played well on defense, intercepting a pass for the third time this season. “Selah Bugingo had a 30-yard touchdown reception on a dart from Magdaleno in the second quarter as well,” said Christiansen.
King ended up winning by a score of 33-19.
“Senior night could not have gone any better,” reflected Christiansen. “This game was pivotal as it put King one game over the .500 mark and gave us momentum heading into the league tournament, which starts next Monday with a game against Corona HS.”
Christiansen realizes with just weeks left in the season, the team will need to “continue to stay disciplined” on the field, finding ways to make big plays when the opportunities arrive, all of which will seed the ground for the success they want in the final league outcome.
