The Lady Wolves dream season came to an end in their Division 2 Quarterfinal match against Bonita. Bonita had the home crowd cheering in the 14th minute when a corner kick was not effectively cleared, and they were able to place the deflected ball into the net to make the score 1-0. Bonita had multiple other scoring chances but were thwarted by Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Henry, whose confidence has grown with every playoff game she has played. With just three minutes into the second half, a ball was played behind King’s defense that they were unable to get a body on it and a Bonita forward was able to shoot it to make the score 2-0.
Over the next 37 minutes, the King players attacked Bonita’s goal but could not find a goal. The girl’s efforts never diminished as they continued to try and get on the scoreboard. When the clock ran out, it was a victory for Bonita, 2-0. King finished the season with a record of 17-8-6
All season we have talked about playing for each other instead of for ourselves. I told them that a team that plays like that has no limits on what they can achieve. We proved it this year as the girls showed so much heart, passion, and dedication to playing together this season. We won 17 games this year after missing the playoffs last year with only 10 wins. This was the most wins we have had since I have been the King coach. I am so incredibly proud of the team and how they are as teammates to one another.
I am so encouraged by the sisterhood the girls have embraced this year. We had some great team leaders that I believe have set the example for future teams to come. I will miss our graduating leaders but look forward to the future to come for the returning players. They have had a wonderful experience with this playoff run, and I believe they will return focused to finish what this year’s team has started. Senior Captain Macy-Paige Quiroz agreed, saying: “The momentum and hard work that we put into our season is a true testament of what we are capable of achieving as a team. We worked hard to make it to CIF and that’s when it showed; all the bonding and chemistry of our team through the bus rides and the memories we made coming up to these final games. We came up short in the quarterfinals but we had an amazing run that really showed how hard we worked for each other. It is a tough loss, but we expect to make the playoffs next year. This season was an unforgettable on that I will always remember”
