The Martin Luther King Wolves returned to the course for the first match of the season, in a JV head-to-head against the Roosevelt Mustangs. The weather, far warmer than the previous week, peaked in the high 70s and provided perfect course conditions for our first opportunity to show off the hard work the team has put in the last few weeks.
Ultimately, the Wolves outlasted the Mustangs in the fading daylight, defeating them 232-239. Maddox Cornwell shared medalist honors with Roosevelt’s Caleb Mitchell, both shooting a solid 43. Aarav Shah from King was close behind with 44, and Samuel Stewart and Levi In tied at 47. Matteo Chavez rounded out King’s team score with a 51, and Cole Metz rallied after a tough start to finish with a 53.
Coach Sjoerdsma said afterward, “I was very proud of the boys’ performance today, how they demonstrated impressive mental resolve during the anxiety of the first match of the season. There were some issues that popped up that we’ll easily be able to address during practice, which offers us plenty of opportunity for growth, as well.”
The boys stayed nicely focused even as the sun set during the last few holes, and even though our match finished in near-total darkness, the energy was bright, and I know they’re raring to take on Roosevelt again next Monday.
