HUNTINGTON BEACH: Seeking good competition and a strong non-league match, the girls from the Inland Empire became beach girls as they took on Marina High School of Huntington Beach on Friday.

“This non-league match is always a good contest and the girls enjoy the competitive environment,” said Shaun Harris, King High’s head coach.

The girls had a solid first round, winning 4-2, but troubles mounted in the 2nd round and it was all tied up 6-6 at the end of 2 rounds.

“The 3rd round consisted of great play on both sides and we were tied 9-9 at the end of the round,” reported Harris.

In tennis, such a “tie score” goes to a tally of the actual games won and lost inside the sets.  So, the two teams weren’t finished.

Amazingly, the game score was also tied 75-75, which prompted each team to go back out to their 3rd round matchup and play a tiebreak. The result was 3-3, but after counting points it ended 38 points for Marina and 36 points for King.

“I have never seen a closer contest in my coaching career,” said Harris.  A great afternoon of team play and close contests ended with the two schools sharing dinner courtside, and then the girls from the Inland Empire headed to the beach for sunset pictures and a time of sand and surf.  All in all, a great way to spend a Friday afternoon.
